What are the Chakras?
Chakras are energy centers in the subtle body, which keep us healthy and in balance with the world around us. In Sanskrit, chakra means “wheel” which means chakras are in a constant state of rotation. Now, depending on the direction of the rotation, whether it is clockwise or counter-clockwise depends on the sex, thus enabling the energies of man and woman to complement each other. This is because the chakras that turn to the right in a man rotate in the opposite direction in a woman and vice versa. Every clockwise rotation is primarily male, or in Chinese teaching is the Yang in nature. Every counterclockwise rotation is female or Yin in nature. The direction in which a chakra rotates varies from chakra to chakra. Since the rotations alternate, it shapes men and women in different ways and leads to supplementation of energies in every area of life.
Traditional writings mention that there are 88,000 chakras, where approximately only 40 secondary chakras can be considered significant. There are seven primary chakras, which are located along a central vertical axis at the front of the body. Now we are going to give you a brief description and understanding of each chakra.
The First Chakra- Muladhara Chakra – Base Chakra (Root Center)
Location: Base of the spine
The root chakra connects us to the physical world. It gives us earthly stability upon which we can construct our lives. This chakra forms the vital foundation for all the higher chakras and is the source of the life force. It influences our physical identity, ambition and stability.
The Second Chakra – Svadhistana Chakra – Sacral Chakra
Location: Lower Abdomen, below the belly button
The sacral chakra connects us to our emotional identity. Sometimes considered to be the real seat of Shakti, the ‘female’ aspect of God in the form of creative energy. It influences our sexuality, pleasure and creativity.
The Third Chakra – Manipura Chakra – Solar Plexus Chakra
Color: Yellow to Golden
Location: The Stomach
The solar plexus chakra represents our sun, our power center. It represents the foundation of our personality. The acceptance of our feelings, wishes and experiences help the third chakra to relax and open up, creating our inner light and illuminating our life. We feel full of joy when the third chakra is opened. It influences our self-confidence and ego.
The Fourth Chakra – Anahata Chakra – Heart Chakra
Location: The Chest
The heart chakra is the center of the entire chakra system. The purpose of the heart chakra is to achieve perfect union through love. Our heart must learn to love, understand and accept our own personality. It influences trust, love and compassion.
The Fifth Chakra – Vishuddha Chakra – Throat Chakra
Location: The Throat
The throat chakra is the center of the human capacity of expression, communication and inspiration. Through the throat chakra we express everything alive within us- our laughing and crying, our feelings of love and happiness, anxiety and aggressiveness, even our knowledge, desires and ideas. Communication primarily takes place in the form of words, gestures and creative forms of expression- such as music, visual and performing arts, dancing etc. Through this chakra, we become conscious of our own real mission in life, our Dharma.
The Sixth Chakra – Ajna Chakra – Third Eye Chakra
Location: The Forehead
The third eye chakra is physically, the highest center of command for the central nervous system. The process of manifestation is connected through us via the third eye. Meaning we create our reality at the physical level. This process takes place automatically and without conscious action on our part. Most of our thoughts in our lives are controlled by our opinions and prejudices by those of others. Therefore, our mind is often not the master but the servant of our emotional thoughts that sometimes dominate us. By developing our consciousness and opening our third eye, we can control this process of manifestation more consciously. Our imagination can create the energy needed in order for us to fulfill our wishes.
The Seventh Chakra – Sahasrara Chakra – Crown Chakra
Location: The top of the head
The crown chakra is the place where we feel at home. It is the source and starting point for the manifestation of all other chakra energies. While we are able to consciously influence the activation of the six lower chakras, in the case of the crown chakra, all we can do is open ourselves and allow things to happen through us. It influences inspiration, spirituality, faith and connection with the divine.
