Arm balances are super fun and can also be quite tricky! Here’s the step by step process on how to do Astavakrasana aka. Eight Angle Pose.
Step 1: Preparation – Sit down with your legs straight in front of you. We want to prepare for the posture by opening our hips.
Bend the right leg and bring the sole of your foot to your left elbow. Wrap your right arm around your right knee and grab hold of your left hand. Now you are cradling your leg (like a baby) and slowly we’re going to ‘rock the baby’. Keeping your right shin bone parallel to the floor, gently rock the leg back and forth to the right.
Step 2: Bring your right hand underneath the leg to grab the outer edge of your right foot. With your left hand grab the inner edge of your foot and bring your right knee back. If possible, try to place the back of your knee on top of the shoulder. Most likely the knee will fall to the back of the arm if the hips are not open enough. No worries, you can still do the posture without the knee being on top of the shoulder.
Step 3: Place hands on the floor and in the same line as your hips. Remember your middle finger should be directly perpendicular to your wrist and fingers spread wide. Grip the hands to the ground so that the whole palm is grabbing on to the ground.
Step 4: Inhale and press the hands firmly into the ground. Engage the core by bringing the navel to the spine. Lift the hip and left leg off the floor. (Here you may put your hands on two blocks to have more space to lift up)
Step 5: Bend the left knee to bring the left foot on top of your right foot and flex the right foot to lock the feet together.
Straighten the legs to the right side and start to bend the arms, lowering your chest down. Your arms should be at a 90 degree angle. Here you have the full posture of Astavakrasana.
Exhale out of the posture and repeat steps 1-5 on the left side! <3 Also, don’t worry about falling, you are so close to the ground, it won’t hurt even if you do fall. Remember that it’s okay to fall, we learn when we do.
Great job for trying and congratulate yourself!! And if this time wasn’t super successful, don’t worry- just keep practicing and all will come.
