Prana – What is it? And how to enhance it!
If you have been practicing yoga for sometime now, I’m sure you must have heard of prana at some point or another. What exactly is prana? Most of us have the basic understanding that it is life force energy, but what does that actually mean?
Prana is what the ancient Indian Vedas referred to as vital life energy. In fact, it’s not only the Vedas that recognized this primordial force, but many cultures are aware of its existence. The Chinese call it “chi”, the Hawaiians call it “mana” and the Egyptians call it “ka”. Prana is the Sanskrit word for all the cosmic energy that permeates everything in the universe. Prana means “constant motion” and it exists in all places and all things, not just in human beings. For example, fresh fruit is filled with prana because it is full of life. When you bite into an orange or apple, take a moment and you can literally feel the energy of the fruit filling you up. It is energizing your being.
Just like when you take a yoga class, the asanas (when they are done with following the breath) are designed to cultivate the prana inside of you. After a yoga class, you may feel more relaxed but you also feel revitalized. Maybe you feel clearer in the mind or stronger in the body. This is because you have raised your vibration, you have raised your prana. All people, places and things can all emit either a high vibration or low vibration.
What is a high vibration?
Things that emit a high vibration are full energy, full of prana. They emit emotions of love, positivity and joy. People who have a high vibration emit such positivity, they radiate like the sun. Just being in their presence can put you in a good mood and make you feel happier.
What is a low vibration?
Things that emit a low vibration means they have less energy. People who have a low vibration operate more on levels of fear, jealousy or anger. People like this take more energy than give energy.
So, how do we move from having a low vibration to a higher vibration?
· Eat alive foods
There are many things we can do to raise our vibrations but the simplest way is by improving the quality of energy that we take in physically. Heavy and processed foods build up acid solids in our molecular structures, lowering our vibration and eventually causing disease. Alive foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, enhance our vibration.
· Think positive
It may sound cliché to say “think happy thoughts” but having a positive outlook keeps our energy levels higher than if we were to have negative thoughts. Sometimes we don’t want to speak bad about others because we will feel bad if we say it out loud, but even thinking those negative thoughts is just as effective as saying them out loud. So if we can put an awareness on ourselves to be more positive to ourselves and those around us, we can keep a higher vibration.
· Move your body
Moving your body is essential to increase the pranic flow. Stagnancy creates blockages in the body, blocking the free flow of prana to move within us. Therefore, disciplines such as yoga, tai chi or qi gong are perfect to cultivate and move the energy we have inside of us. These disciplines focus on movement with the breath which is exactly what we need to raise our energy levels. You should also expand your horizons and explore different activities if yoga isn’t your thing. Try dancing or surfing or swimming, anything to get the blood flowing can enhance your vibration.
· Spend time in Nature
Being around nature not only has mental, physical and emotional benefits, but also energetical benefits. Nature heals us, it reduces anger, fear, stress and increases pleasant feelings. Physically it reduces blood pressure, muscle tension and stress hormones. Even a simple plant in a room can have a significant impact on stress and anxiety. Nature even helps us cope with pain; we become absorbed by nature scenes and get distracted from our pain and discomfort. A recent study was conducted when participants viewed nature scenes, the parts of the brain associated with empathy and love lit up. When the participants viewed urban scenes, the parts of the brain associated with fear and anxiety were activated, meaning that nature inspires feelings of love and connection to each other.
· Surround yourself with positive people
You know that saying “your vibe attracts your tribe”, this is a nice literal meaning that the vibrations you give off is exactly the kind of people you attract into your life. Let go of the people who put you down, who make you feel sad or who do not see your value. Surround yourself with people who uplift you and who believe in you. You don’t need to give your energy to the people who don’t appreciate your time and worth. Not saying that unhappy are undeserving of your time, but that your wellbeing has to come first before helping others.
Take your time with these tips and don’t feel you have to do all of them at once. Little by little you can slowly add these tips into your daily life. You will slowly notice that the more energy you cultivate, the more you will naturally be filled with prana. The more prana you cultivate in your life, a flow of coincidences and synchronicities will arise- leading you to the path in life where you should be. Sound interesting? We’ll save that for another post. Until then- sending you lots of love, light and positive vibes 🙂
