It’s no secret that technology has taken over our lives, so much that it’s almost impossible to imagine living without it. Even if there are tons of positive benefits of technology these days, it’s important to re-energize ourselves by finding healthy ways to disconnect. Many of us are guilty of spending too much time on Instagram or Facebook, connecting with more people online rather than the actual real people that are around us like family or friends. Before you realize it, you have spent almost an hour just scrolling through your news feed, doing nothing really productive and just feeding your brain with an overload of information. Sure, we also have important emails and messages that we need to respond to, but it’s not necessary to be connected 24/7. Just like everything in life, a healthy balance is best, not too much and not too little. Consider these options to help you disconnect from technology and help you lead a more balanced life!
1. Keep your mornings free
Instead of starting your day by checking your messages on your phone, do something else. Spend time to meditate, make yourself a healthy breakfast, or start with a yoga session – and don’t make an instastory about it! Just a few short years ago, SnapChat and Instagram Stories didn’t exist and we didn’t care what others were doing before, so why should we be so interested about what others do now? Concentrate on you and you will definitely have a more productive and relaxed day.
2. Turn off notifications from social media apps such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter
Some of us have jobs that revolve around social media which means that it is important to stay connected, but we also don’t need to be bothered every time someone likes a picture or comments on a video. Instead of checking your phone every time you receive a notification, turn those notifications off and check out those notifications when you have some free time. You’ll find yourself less distracted and with more time in the present moment.
3. Read books
Although we are constantly being fed information all day long from our mobile phones, it’s always refreshing to get lost for hours in a good book. Books have the magic to give our minds an imagination and bring you to another world. They can bring you to a new place and words can create a vivid experience in our heads. Books can help you disconnect not only from technology, but disconnect you from other problems you may be experiencing in your life.
4. More activities
Find a new hobby, create a new hobby or even just try a class out. You know when you see someone doing something you’ve always wanted to do? But ‘never had the time’ or maybe you were just too shy to even begin to try? Usually that initial interest is your intuition showing you a pathway and hoping you will have the courage to go down that road. You never know where a slight interest can take you! But having a new interest can create a new happiness in our lives, where it can take us away from the mindless hours that we spend on technology.
5. Leave your phone
It’s not necessary for our phone to be in our hands all the time. Slowly start to leave your phone when you are doing something that doesn’t require you to have it. For example, if you’re cooking- we don’t necessarily need to have our phone next to us. Leave your phone in another room and immerse yourself in the present moment while enjoying every step in making your meal.
6. Be in Nature
Get away for the weekend. Bathe in the fresh scents of the forest or paddle out into the middle of the sea. Nature always finds its ways to heal ourselves. Being in the great outdoors is always a refreshing experience for both the body and mind.
7. Don’t let your phone be the last thing you see at night
Let your mind rest and don’t let your phone or a Netflix movie be the last thing your eyes see before you decide to shut down. Set your alarm, put your phone aside and maybe write in a journal. Or even sit in silence before you fall asleep. Spend time with you and yourself in peaceful solitude. So often we don’t like to be alone, that we constantly need a distraction. But feeling comfortable with only yourself is one of the best things you can ever do for yourself.
Try one of these 7 ways to help you get back to living a healthier and more balanced lifestyle. Disconnect yourself from technology and connect back to you and the people around you. Remember the important things in life and enjoy being offline!
